As you probably know, giving generic gifts for whatever occasion can be really stupid and a waste of money. Especially on holidays, the prices are outrageously high for common gift items. You can pay over 3 times more for the same chocolate on the right day in a convenience store, compared to regular day in big stores. Obviously most people don’t buy it(i hope it is the case), but it shows how shitty it is.
What if you gave something that you would throw away anyway? Obviously if you can sell it with good profit then just sell it. But there are many things not worth selling, and if you want to throw it away then just give it to someone else if you planned to buy them something anyway. Make sure it’s somewhat useful to them, though.
I realized that after seeing that things have much different value for different people. Sometimes you can’t use something or you already have much better replacements, but for people that need it and don’t have it, it’s like a gift to get it for free.
Note, don’t give away everything you have, this is not “minimalism”. You may need to buy something later after throwing it out. This is probably impossible to do in small apartment. Yet another reason to not live like this. For 10 soyjaks in cages there has to be 1 person that can repair stuff.
Example of an item like this is micro USB cable. I don’t want to deal with this clusterfuck, but someone else would say, hey someone is throwing away micro USB cables that still don’t have connection problems, my phone uses that.
Of course i don’t even have to throw it away because i can find a different playing around use for this cable or just solder the cables, but i don’t need it. No, i don’t want a non-replaceable cable without a connector sticking out of my electronics, let me pay $5 more for USB C. Same with more expensive headphones. I perfectly know how to solder but i don’t want to drive a ““premium”” car and keep a toolbox in back seat to do basic things with the car, while a dude drives by and has all these things without having to use mechanic tools, in a cheaper car. This is what Apple does with their products.
